How to Choose the Right Partner In Business

Justin and I were guests on a podcast that’s hosted by Travis Gomez and Emma Rainville.

The episode was all about partnerships… 🤝

And it was one of the first times Justin and I have talked about our partnership publicly…

There is one takeaway from the conversation that I wanted to share…

And it’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot over the past few months.

Here it is: 👇

“Whenever possible, choose a partner who has already gotten to where you want to go.”

You see…

One mistake I see a lot of entrepreneurs make…❌

Is to partner with someone who is at the same level as they are.

It’s an understandable instinct…🤷‍♂️

If you’ve scaled a company to $5MM in sales in the past…

Then it’s easy to look at someone else who has also scaled a company to $5MM in sales in the past…

And say, “With our powers combined, we can take our new venture to $10MM in sales or more!”

How to Choose the Right Partner In BusinessBut it normally doesn’t work that way.

Instead, the reality is that both of you know how to get a company to $5MM in sales…

But neither of you know how to get a company to $10MM in sales.

So now you’ve got two partners who are both scratching their heads, wondering how to take things to the next level.

Does that make sense?

What’s much better for you…

Is if your partner has already taken a company to $10MM in sales, or $20MM in sales, or whatever it is…

Because if they have, and they’re the right partner (meaning they really played a key part in hitting those numbers)…

They already have the roadmap to reaching your goals…

Plus, they already know what pitfalls and landmines to be wary of.

As a result, hitting your goal is going to be much more achievable.

How to Choose the Right Partner In BusinessNow, you might be reading this and saying…

Well, if I’ve only built something to $5MM in sales…

Why would someone who has built a company to $10MM or $20MM want to partner with me?

Fair question…

But ultimately it comes down complementary skillsets.

For the folks on my list who are copywriters…

You actually have a big advantage here.

The reason why is because most people who have built 8, or even 9 figure businesses either aren’t expert copywriters…

Or they are – but their time is better spent doing things besides writing copy.

So, if you can come in as the partner who provides all of the sales copy…

Along with the big ideas behind new campaigns, promos, and funnels…

That’s very valuable to a potential partner…

And it can get you a seat at the table pretty fast…

Even though you may not be nearly as experienced or qualified as your partner is.

A few quick examples:

When I started writing copy for Lion’s Publishing in 2014…

They were a brand-new company…

Yet the team had already built multiple 8 figure businesses in the past.

The only thing that was missing was good copy…

I provided that…

And they scaled to over $100MM in sales within a year.

Meanwhile, when Justin partnered with Allen Baler and his company 4Patriots…

Allen and his wife had already built other companies and scaled them previously…

So when Justin came in and provided incredible copy…

It rapidly enabled their new venture to hit over $20MM in annual revenue.

In both our cases…

We were the less experienced “partner” in the business for sure…

But we brought something so valuable to the table…

And we were able to get a large chunk of the financial upside as a result.

Anyways, I hope this post gets your wheels turning 🙂
