A lot is written about the power of commitments…
But less is said about the importance of recommitting.
Because here’s the thing:
It’s easy to commit to something…
But it’s harder to stay committed day in and day out. 📆
When we slack on a commitment, one option is to beat ourselves up about it…
To try and shame ourselves into being “better” in the future…🧐
But pretty much every study in psychology ever lets us know that’s a losing strategy.
So rather than get down when we don’t fulfill a commitment…
It’s better to just accept that and then recommit.
For me personally, I enjoy the process of recommitting.
For example, every year or so, I recommit to copywriting.
This doesn’t mean I wasn’t writing before, or that I was intentionally half-assing my work…
Rather, I’ll find that I’m not studying copy as much as I was previously…
Or going as deep in my research as I used to…
Or practicing RMBC as explicitly as I’d like to be.
So I recommit, and the result is always an explosion in productivity.
But copy is just one example.
I was thinking about it more this morning…
And I’m also going to recommit to just bettering and improving myself.
I’m not doing this because of any trigger event…
Life is pretty good…
And I have a lot of strong habits…
But that doesn’t mean I can’t continue to get better…
Or to optimize myself, my effectiveness, my impact, or my life.
Optimization is an iterative process…
And I just reflected on how I can be even more intentional in the ways I move the dials.
So that’ll be a focus of mine.
I think the key to all of this though…
Is to have the attitude that it is fun to commit to things…
It’s exciting…
An adventure…
Commitment, and recommitment, mean you’ll be embarking on a transformative journey.
So one thing you can try out, if you want, is to think of an area in your life that would benefit from you recommitting…
Then think about what recommitting would look like…
And, if you’re feeling especially bold, perhaps even write out a plan for yourself.
Up to you…
I hate being prescriptive…
But this process yields big results in my life…
So I wanted to share 🙂
